Serving Plate L FCK

The very first meeting between Serax and Frédérick Gautier in 2016 triggered an emotional connection that would soon lead to a unique cooperation. Because without the combination of water, earth and sand, mankind would never have been able to invent concrete, the very essence of modern housing.

 

Each item in this early collection is unique, building on elementary shapes such as cylinders, columns, cubes, cones and discs. Furthermore, the plates and cups also bear the inscription FCK, an ambiguous pun, but not in the way you might think: the three letters not only represent the initials of the designer, but in the technical jargon of the construction industry. FCK is also the unit used for the characteristic compressive strength of concrete after a drying period of a lunar month.

 

After their first firing, these serving plates were glazed with a semi-reactive glaze before being returned to the oven. The result? A robust serving plate in an earthy hue. The imperfections emphasize the artisanal look and feel.

Serax was founded by two brothers, Serge and Axel Van Den Bossche, in 1986. Based in Belgium but with a global reach and outlook, they create contemporary homeware in collaboration with leading international designers and makers, bound together by a shared vision of elevating everyday spaces.

 

Every Serax object is a balance of aesthetics and function. From the smallest to the largest, each one becomes a treasured object that can last for generations: a work of art in its own right.

After being an artistic director for over 20 years, handling the launch of various cultural projects, French designer Frédérick Gautier embarked on studies at the École du Paysage in Versailles, where he became acquainted with modelling and ceramics. Since he is also passionate about growing food, he did some research about tools that were once used to feed oneself with. Due to his fascination for brutalism, Gautier went in search of a type of clay that closely resembles concrete after the firing process.

 

Since launching, his FCK signature has adorned all of his creations working with this material. For each project, he moves his studio to a different location where he incorporates the architectural fragments from his immediate surroundings into everyday objects.
